Meaning of Penance in the Oracle of the Triad
Card No. 13
This is a card heavy with meaning that we now have to deal with. Indeed, just as the number 13 can bring bad luck for the somewhat superstitious, the Penance card sends us back to our deepest doubts and anxieties. It is therefore negative for the querent, foretelling only a difficult period soon to come upon their destiny. Difficult because it will be hampered by failures partly of their own making, as they will soon seem lost in their thoughts, devoid of any drive, ready to commit every possible mistake. Fortunately, the Penance card does not foresee this period lasting over the long term, so the querent will have to overcome this dark passage, which may nonetheless leave them with a bitter taste, as well as a few emotional scars.
Unlike almost all the cards making up the Oracle of the Triad, this card depicts no symbol of any kind. Here there are no references to Greek or Egyptian mythology, and even less to Masonic codes or celestial symbols. In fact, the card shows only the drawing of a man standing with his back turned, arms raised behind his head, like a submissive or condemned slave being sent to the gallows. Marked by very dark shadows and greyish lines, this card carries an absolute sadness that evokes the notions of passivity and submission that we all go through when we are adrift, emotionally speaking.
During a divinatory reading, the Penance card therefore tells us that we are going to struggle, and that the colour of our sky in the coming days will be the bleakest possible. The combinations with the other cards will be many and will describe more precisely the painful ordeals the querent will have to endure.
