The 7-Card Tarot Spread

While reading a daily or weekly astrological horoscope may reassure some people about their future, it tends to be more entertaining than serious when it comes to meeting their expectations and giving them concrete answers to their questions.

By contrast, the divinatory art of clairvoyance offers many practices far better suited to enlightening them about their future. This is the case with tarot reading where, thanks to the interpretation of the cards in a tarot deck, a querent will find the ideal guidance to look ahead into the future.

Among the many spreads on offer, the 7-card tarot spread deserves our attention.

What is the 7-card tarot spread?

Love, work, family, health and finances are deeply pressing concerns for each one of us. Whether we enjoy a comfortable life or are unfortunately going through a rough patch, we all keep thinking about them regularly, because these areas are the most essential to living serenely.

When one of them confronts us with doubt and the situation grows so overwhelming that we struggle to see things clearly, the best course is to seek guidance. And a consultation with a tarot reader can be remarkably effective in getting us out of such a deadlock. In tarot reading there are many decks, such as the Persian tarot or the Rider-Waite, but it is the Tarot of Marseille deck that is most widely used. There are also plenty of divinatory spreads, each with its own merits. The Oracle de Belline and the astrological wheel are just two examples among others.

But there is one that also stands out from the crowd: the 7-card tarot spread. Admittedly very close to the cross spread, it is a little more complete, as it is enhanced with two extra cards. It is generally performed with the 22 major arcana of a Tarot of Marseille deck, although some make it more elaborate by adding the 56 minor arcana.

In any case, it sets itself apart with the drawing of an uncovered card that serves as the ambassador trump throughout the spread. Through the interpretation of the 7 cards, it answers the question asked while taking into account all the topics mentioned above, which is why it is one of the most renowned spreads for uncovering the buried things in our past and the mysteries surrounding our future.

How does the 7-card tarot spread work?

So you must first think carefully about the main question you are going to ask during this spread. It must be deeply personal to you, and you must stay focused on it throughout the session. You then need to lay out all the cards in front of you face up, in order to choose one from the deck that represents or symbolizes the area your question refers to.

This card will be of the utmost importance, as it will be your ambassador card. For example, if your question is about love, it would be fitting to choose the card of the Lovers. This card will be the 1st of your spread and will be placed on the left of the 1st row. Then you will draw the 6 other cards face down and place them to form two rows of three stacked cards, along with card no. 4, which will be placed on the right, in the middle between the two rows.

Then comes the time for the interpretation of the cards according to what they represent and symbolize. You will begin with the two cards on the left of the two rows (1 and 5), which will speak to you of the past and of any prior action. Then the two cards in the middle (2 and 6), which will represent you in the present moment. And finally, the two cards on the right of the two rows (3 and 7), which will foretell events to come. To finish, you will turn over card no. 4, left alone on the right; it is the one that will reveal the final answer to your question, after synthesizing all the other interpretations.

There are variations of this spread, but this version is the simplest to perform while still being highly effective.

Why do a 7-card tarot spread?

You do not perform a divinatory tarot spread simply to have fun or pass the time, because for it to be effective, you must be fully focused on the question you are expecting an answer to. On the other hand, if you are in optimal conditions of concentration, the interpretation of the cards can be invaluable in clearing up a stuck situation.

What is more, the method used in each of the different card spreads will remain an extraordinary experience for every querent. Indeed, the divinatory side of this kind of session often stays anchored in the memory for a long time. Not only for the help it provides, but also for the satisfaction of being able to step back and thus better approach the next part of our journey.
