Properties of Rock Crystal

Hyaline quartz, or rock crystal by its common name, belongs to the silicate mineral group. The father of mineralogy, Georgius Agricola, gave it its modern definition during the 16th century. Rock crystal is composed of pure silicon dioxide.

Unlike other quartzes, it is a monocrystalline variety. It thus remains perfectly pure and transparent. It is its conchoidal fractures that give it its beautiful naturally polished appearance.

Quartzes make up 12% of our planet’s lithospheric mass. This mixture of oxygen and silicon is also part of the composition of many other rocks: granite, gneiss, sand, sandstone, etc.

The crystal growth process lasts several decades, even centuries. To this day, the largest quartz ever extracted measures more than 6 metres long and weighs nearly 40 tonnes.

The monocrystallisation of pure silicon dioxide only occurs under certain conditions. These come together in magmatic or sedimentary geological environments. In the hollow spaces left by surrounding rocks, the crystal grows until it fills the void. Its slow growth gives it its particular shimmer and its pyramidal tips.

Sometimes, you see inclusions through transparency in rock crystal. Appearing during its formation, they contain gases, liquids or other minerals. They tell you about the growth conditions of the crystal.

Each type of inclusion has its own name. The « Thetys’s hair » refers to green mineral fibres.

The black tourmaline needles that streak the crystal are, for their part, called « Cupid’s arrows ». Dozens of variations of inclusion exist. Thus, each rock crystal is unique.
