Nature and composition of rock crystal

Hyaline quartz, or rock crystal by its common name, belongs to the silicate mineral group. The father of mineralogy, Georgius Agricola, gave it its modern definition during the 16th century. Rock crystal is composed of pure silicon dioxide.
Unlike other quartzes, it is a monocrystalline variety. It thus remains perfectly pure and transparent. It is its conchoidal fractures that give it its beautiful naturally polished appearance.

A common mineral family
Quartzes make up 12% of our planet’s lithospheric mass. This mixture of oxygen and silicon is also part of the composition of many other rocks: granite, gneiss, sand, sandstone, etc.

The crystal growth process lasts several decades, even centuries. To this day, the largest quartz ever extracted measures more than 6 metres long and weighs nearly 40 tonnes.
The natural formation of rock crystal
The monocrystallisation of pure silicon dioxide only occurs under certain conditions. These come together in magmatic or sedimentary geological environments. In the hollow spaces left by surrounding rocks, the crystal grows until it fills the void. Its slow growth gives it its particular shimmer and its pyramidal tips.

The natural inclusions specific to rock crystals

Sometimes, you see inclusions through transparency in rock crystal. Appearing during its formation, they contain gases, liquids or other minerals. They tell you about the growth conditions of the crystal.

Each type of inclusion has its own name. The « Thetys’s hair » refers to green mineral fibres.
The black tourmaline needles that streak the crystal are, for their part, called « Cupid’s arrows ». Dozens of variations of inclusion exist. Thus, each rock crystal is unique.
Other stones and crystals in crystal healing
Rock crystal is not the only quartz to possess crystal-healing virtues. The majority of these semi-precious stones let you benefit from their own virtues. Crystal healers thus use:
- the coloured crystalline varieties, which include amethyst, ametrine, citrine, hematoid, rose or smoky quartz, etc.;

- the cryptocrystalline varieties, derived from chalcedony, which include agate, onyx, jasper, carnelian, etc.

Rock crystal throughout History
Many cultures attribute magical virtues to rock crystal. Since it is present throughout the world, all the peoples of the globe extract it and shape it over the course of history. A universal symbol of purity and healing, it crosses time and has accompanied humanity for millennia on the path of spirituality.

At the dawn of humanity
Rock crystal has accompanied human beings since their first steps. University documentation on the use of hyaline quartz archaeologically attests to its extraction and cutting during Prehistory.

It is no doubt its solidity and its aesthetics that won over Homo sapiens on the Alpine peaks. However, quartz possesses another crucial virtue.
Struck, it proves capable of producing a spark. Ideal for starting a fire. Was this stone nonetheless used at the time for its magical virtues ? Even today, we know nothing of the rituals practised by prehistoric peoples.
Rock crystal jewellery during Antiquity

The Ancient Greeks named quartz krystallos. Translated into modern English, this means « cold as ice ».
Thus, the ancients convinced themselves that rock crystal was born of a freezing beyond imagination. As early as 1500 BC, the Mycenaean civilisation shaped this fine stone into statuettes or jewellery.
The Greeks, then the Romans, used it to craft necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants with magical virtues.
Crystal healing and Christianity
In the Middle Ages, a large part of the knowledge of the ancients was lost. Christians rejected ancient beliefs as pagan. Nevertheless, rock crystal continued on its way.
It found favour with the clergy. Shining with its purity, the fine stone embodied the symbol of the Immaculate Conception. It carried within it the culmination of a spiritual quest.

Rock crystal outside Europe

Rock crystal is even considered the embryo of a diamond, a symbol of maturation towards spiritual awakening.

The decline of rock crystal
In our modern world, where we gradually abandon the spiritual dimension, rock crystal loses its splendour. Even so, artists continue to use it.
During the Renaissance, in the workshops of Milan and Florence, the rock crystal stone was shaped to create luxurious tableware and jewellery.
Hyaline quartz fascinated the great figures of this world. In his time, Louis XIV thus owned the largest collection of rock crystals. Today, only books still bear witness to the beliefs of the past.

Purer, they contain no inclusion and perfectly meet the needs of industry. The extraction of natural rock crystals nevertheless continues, mainly for jewellery.
The global extraction of natural rock crystals
Monocrystal deposits of translucent quartz are present all over the planet. Brazil currently exploits the most important ones in operation. Other producers extract rock crystals of impeccable quality in Arkansas, in the Alps, in the Himalayas and in Madagascar.
