The Butyakengo, which gives it its name, is a benevolent spirit, or rather a guardian angel, in Gypsy culture.
The Butyakengo, which literally means « the man who has eyes everywhere », is therefore present in every member of the Gypsy people. He takes care of them, watches over them when they are close to danger, and warns them when they are about to be attacked or to fall ill. To call out to all those he protects and give them advice, the Butyakengo goes through their left ear.
That is the reason why it is not uncommon to see Gypsy men and women put the little finger of their left hand into their left ear : it means that they are receiving a message sent by their protective spirit.

They are Gypsies, judging by their colourful clothes, but also because all 3 of them have their little finger pushed into their left ear, as if to be better connected to the angel’s music. Around them wanders a white dog, which for its part represents the soul of the departed among the Gypsies.
