Virtues of Labradorite Stone

Discovered and described in 1780 by Adolarius Forster, labradorite appears neither in Western folklore nor in that of the East. The masters of esoteric practices nonetheless took hold of it from the 19th century onwards. Drawing on the traditions of polar and Native American peoples, they attributed a great many benefits to the iridescent stone.

Labradorite has become a must-have of lithotherapy. Used by healers for its protective virtues, it charms the wider public with its unique appearance. It indeed boasts shimmering reflections that are out of the ordinary. You can wear it as a pendant or as a bracelet. Discover the virtues and the benefits of labradorite.

Geological composition, characteristics and formation of labradorite rock

labradorite jaune

labradorite rouge

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar of the tectosilicate family. It is characterised by its vitreous mineral lustre and its iridescent optical properties.

Generally of a blue-green colour, in certain deposits it takes on tints of red or yellow. It is sometimes colourless or extremely pale, almost spectral.

The great mineral family of feldspars

Made up of 19 different silicates, feldspars are the most abundant mineral group on the planet. On their own they make up more than 50% of the Earth’s crust. They include numerous fine stones, such as andesine, amazonite, orthoclase or sun and moon stones. They are divided into several broad categories, among them the soda-lime feldspars (or plagioclases).

feldspaths

This mineral sub-group, to which labradorite belongs, stands out for its Schiller effect. Its mineral lamellae assemble according to a polysynthetic twinning with polarising cleavages. In other words, mineral layers stack up in the manner of a millefeuille. This is what causes that particular iridescence when light makes its way between them. Characterising this structure, the fracture lines follow a precise north-south angle.

The natural formation of feldspars

An essential mineral component of the Earth, feldspars are born under diverse geological conditions. From volcanic to metamorphic rocks, by way of sedimentary ones: all are liable to host the formation of feldspars.

When it grows in hydrothermal veins, pegmatites or Alpine fissures, the rock crystallises. It then takes on the aspect of a gem. Moonstone and sanidine result from this exceptional process.

The features specific to labradorite

Like all soda-lime feldspars, labradorite is composed of a blend of albite (sodic pole) and anorthite (calcic pole). Mineral lamellae are interleaved between the two and amplify the iridescence specific to plagioclases. Specialists call this phenomenon, which goes beyond the Schiller effect, labradorescence . The term is, however, scientifically incorrect.

Labradorite also stands out through its proportions, ranging between 30/70 and 50/50.

Extraction, use and modern designation of labradorite rock

Since the 19th century, labradorite has been extracted just about everywhere on the planet. Today it delights collectors and lovers of beautiful stones. Although its name is a source of debate among specialists, it remains a must-have of lithotherapy.

A common rock on Earth

Plagioclase feldspars (or labradorites) are found across the entire planet. Worked deposits exist in Canada, the Congo, France, Finland, Italy, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, the USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Certain operations offer unique varieties. These display distinctive iridescences and colours.

An exclusively aesthetic use

For modern industry, soda-lime feldspars hold no interest. Even if the rock makes up other ores, it possesses no useful technological property. On the other hand, its particular iridescence, when polished, earns it genuine success among jewellers.

A historically controversial name

The term labradorite comes from the place where its topotype was discovered, the first known specimen, in the region of Labrador in Canada.

Other less common names exist: carnatite, hafnefjordite, mauilite, radauite, silicite or even spectrolite.

None is recognised by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). The authority of reference considers labradorite to be a variety of anorthite.

Labradorite rock through History

Before its discovery in 1780, and despite the existence of numerous deposits on European soil, labradorite never appears in esoteric writings.

Although it marks neither East nor West, it holds a definite appeal among the peoples of the far north of the globe. A great many names designate it there. Some of these so-called primitive cultures use it for its magical virtues.

The cultures of the Arctic Circle

Labradorite is particularly present in the Nordic civilisations. The Inuit see in this rock a crystallised aurora borealis. They imagine that in the coldest moments of the year, the stellar fire freezes and falls to earth.

The Eskimo peoples and the Scandinavians share another version of the legend that reverses the myth. The first aurora borealis is thus born when a warrior cleaves a labradorite with his spear. Other beliefs suppose that the rock holds the souls of their ancestors.

Native American beliefs

Thanks to their trade with the Arctic Circle, certain Native American tribes managed to obtain labradorite. They shape it, polish it and use it in their rituals.

Such is notably the case of the Algonquins, a people native to Ontario. Its shamans ascribe to labradorite some divine protective virtues. They associate its bluish shimmer with the celestial light.

Indian traditions

In ancient India, people did not distinguish between the different iridescent stones. They attributed similar virtues to all these rocks with iridescent reflections, similar to labradorite. The priests associated them with the feminine. A symbol of gentleness, harmony and love, they are powerful stones of protection.

The spiritual ties of labradorite rock

cultures nordiques et amérindiennes

Absent from European, Eastern and Asian cultures, labradorite belongs to no great tradition. The specialists of the esoteric arts have nonetheless studied its properties for more than 200 years.

Drawing on the Nordic and Native American cultures, they associate the rock of the auroras borealis with precise chakras and astrological signs.

Labradorite and the Buddhist chakras

The original Buddhist tradition does not know labradorite. It therefore did not integrate it into its earliest lithotherapeutic practices.

However, through repeated experimentation, the rock becomes linked to the 6th chakra, the 3rd Eye (Ajna) . Laid upon this energy point during meditation, it strengthens the capacities of perception and understanding. It is also associated with the minor chakras of the hands. It thus increases the powers of healing.

Labradorite and the astrological signs

Western lithotherapeutic traditions associate the various stones with astrological signs. Nonetheless, everyone is free to wear all the gems as they please. These correspondences merely establish the best affinities. They improve the lithotherapeutic effectiveness of the jewellery. Thus, labradorite tends to favour:

labradorite signe du poisson
  • Pisces, born between 20 February and 20 March. It soothes their anxieties and reduces their hypersensitivity;
  • Aries, born between 21 March and 20 April. It calms their headstrong temperament and relieves their sensations of fatigue;
  • Gemini, born between 22 May and 21 June. Worn as jewellery, it helps them concentrate;
  • Cancer, born between 22 June and 23 July. It lessens their vulnerability and strengthens their emotional balance;
  • Capricorn, born between 22 December and 20 January. It reduces their stress and mental clutter and supports their capacities for public expression.

Alternative medicines and labradorite rock

Today, many people are seeking a less cold medicine, more attentive to their body. Alternative medicinal practices offer natural and effective solutions. They take an interest in you, in your wishes, your personality and your needs.

médecine alternative

Even if science grants them only a contextual effect, the alternative medicines have numerous methods to support your healing. They compile thousands of years of traditions and intuit natural solutions. They base the proof of their effectiveness on the feedback of hundreds of millions of patients across the world. Their holistic approach respects your sensitivity.

Feng shui to balance the energies of your home

Prevention is better than cure.

Feng shui rests in large part on this wise saying. To improve your well-being, this thousand-year-old Chinese esoteric practice organises your home. It arranges your material possessions in a precise way. By following strict rules, it harmonises the circulation of the energies of your living spaces.

feng shui

If labradorite is absent from traditional beliefs, feng shui seizes upon this new rock with great virtues. The masters of the discipline detect its energy potential and make of it a protective stone.

Placed within your home, it absorbs negative energies, banishes them from your interior and preserves you from them. It thus supports your health day to day. Set it near a space dedicated to medical therapy to repel the energies of illness. It reduces their symptoms and the risks of contamination.

Radiesthesia to discern ailments

It is hard to heal if you do not know what afflicts you. Radiesthesia is an essential alternative medicine. It detects the pathologies that affect your body and your soul. Using a stone as a pendulum together with a Bovis board, the practitioner detects the vibrations of your three bodies and their irregularities. He thus determines which ills affect you and informs the healer of the care to be carried out.

pendule labradorite

In radiesthesia, labradorite protects against bad waves. Many practitioners place this rock in their consultation room. Cleverly positioned between them and the patients, it absorbs the negative energies of illnesses and preserves them from unwanted contamination. It is rarely shaped into a pendulum.

Lithotherapy to regenerate and heal yourself

If you know the ill that gnaws at you, treat it without delay. Valued since Prehistory, lithotherapy often proves effective. It supports your capacities for regeneration and self-healing. Carry stones on you, whether rough, tumbled or in the form of jewellery. You will thus benefit from their vibratory power.

There are pendants and bracelets of excellent-quality labradorite made by experienced artisans who select certified rocks. They choose them for their energetic virtues and their sublime shimmer.

pendentifs labradorite

Note: the benefits of stones stem from tradition and belief! These rely on the opinion of specialists in esotericism, and not on scientific, sourced evidence. The lithotherapeutic virtues of jewellery are only indicative. Stones never substitute for a conventional medical treatment. While they support your capacities for healing and regeneration, they do not replace the informed advice of a health professional.

Maintaining and revitalising your labradorite rock

The benefits of your labradorite come to it from its vibratory potential. When you wear your lithotherapeutic jewellery, it gradually empties of its energy and loses its virtues. By absorbing the surrounding negative waves, your stone also becomes charged with bad vibrations.

bracelet labradorite

It then no longer lets you benefit from its protective capacities. In time, its use becomes dangerous. So that it preserves its beneficial power, carry out a simple and regular upkeep through small rituals.

Purifying your labradorite

To purify your labradorite and have it recover all of its protective virtues, plunge it into spring water. Its purity dissolves the bad energies and restores its vibratory neutrality. On the other hand, avoid sea salt. It does not get along well with labradorite.

nettoyer labradorite

If your jewel is made of wood or metal, do not forget that it fears water! When you immerse it, dry it carefully after your ritual. Is your stone tarnishing? Clean it with a soft cloth. You will at once recover its characteristic iridescence.

Recharging your labradorite

Labradorite, like all other stones, needs to be recharged regularly with positive energy. To preserve its benefits, expose it to a few hours of sunlight each week. The rock does not fear the rays of the star.

exposer labradotire soleil

It therefore runs no risk of losing its lustre. If you are in one of those seasons that lack light, simply set your labradorite on a bed of clear quartz or amethysts. Placing it inside a geode will produce the same effect.

Virtues and benefits of labradorite rock

In less than 250 years of experimentation and use, labradorite has become an essential of lithotherapy. It possesses astonishing capacities to stimulate regeneration, notably on your vertebral column.

labradorite lithothérapie

A stone of protection and of healing, it shines through its many virtues for your mind, your body and your energy flows.

Labradorite and lithotherapeutic combinations

To amplify the natural benefits of stones, it is common in lithotherapy to combine them with one another. Besides the creations of artisans, such as feng shui stars or 7-chakra jewellery, it is possible to combine them yourself. Certain combinations are to be avoided, but most prove particularly positive. To choose them, rely on your lithotherapeutic needs.

Do your stones accompany you day to day ? You are seeking to multiply their virtues, but fear bad combinations? The simplest method consists of combining them according to their colour. Rocks sharing a similar tint often possess similar vibrations and virtues.

  • With its blue-green colour, labradorite pairs with chrysocolla, azurite-malachite, apatite, turquoise or tourmaline.

If your lithotherapeutic practice aims at a precise benefit, combine your stones according to their virtues. By sharing similar vibrations, they harmonise and mutually multiply their effects.

  • Are you seeking protection against negative waves? Accompany your labradorite with a tiger’s eye, an onyx or a black tourmaline.

  • Are you trying to reduce your vertebral pain? Then obsidian and rock crystal are excellent choices. To improve your memory, selenite, pyrite or garnet prove ideal.

When your stones are part of a meditative practice, combine them rather according to their chakras.

  • Thus, for your labradorite, favour the gems linked to the 3rd Eye, such as lapis lazuli, sodalite, tanzanite, sugilite, dumortierite and hawk’s eye.

  • Does your labradorite serve to catalyse the chakras of your hands during energy care? Pair it with an amethyst, a rock crystal or a selenite. They offer it a surplus of vibration and increase its natural virtues.
