Meaning of Emptiness in the Osho Zen Tarot

Without being a truly dark card of the Osho Zen tarot, it embodies the void and true nothingness. In this encounter, nothing is going to happen for the Fool, who carries on along his path through his spiritual journey. Even though this card shows him that “nothing” does indeed exist, it lets him know that the total emptiness of all things can be just as vibrant as everything that is alive and therefore possible. And so Emptiness, even if it may seem disconcerting to him, is also part of his initiatory path.

The Emptiness card is as black as the depths of the universe. It symbolises the void of outer space and the emptiness of our mind when, at a given moment, nothing concrete happens any more. Black as a night without a moon and without a single star, it represents the hole, as gaping as it is deep, that we have to face up to at a precise point in our destiny.

In a divinatory reading, this card announces a kind of deadlock and confronts us with dilemmas that are hard to resolve. Without plunging us into extreme negativity, it places us in an unusual position of solitude where, oddly enough, nothing is going to move but where, on the contrary, everything is going to stagnate in a slowness that is hardly cheering. Fortunately, Emptiness is only temporary and the dark state of mind into which it plunges us will soon see the celestial light again.
