It is an important card in each of the different tarot decks, because it touches on the most essential subject of a lifetime for many of us: love and the feelings that flow from it. Within the spiritual journey experienced by the Fool, it is the meeting with the soul mate, which begins with a physical love blending the warmth of the heart and sexuality. Then this amorous desire turns into a true love, where feelings take precedence over the physical act. Finally comes the transformation of this love into compassion, which is the strongest feeling one can experience towards the beloved.

The Lovers card aptly symbolises these 3 phases observed during a true love shared between 2 people. First of all, at its centre is depicted a burning red heart within which 2 beings are entwined to become one, above a carpet of red roses.

They embody sexuality and the warmth radiating from their depiction speaks for itself. Then, following the raised wings surrounding this heart, we come upon 2 identical faces set face to face, like the Yin& the Yang, whose dark, star-filled hair symbolises infinite love. Finally, at the top of the card, the divine light illuminating their heads represents ultimate compassion. In a divinatory reading, the Lovers card often heralds positivity in love, or a new encounter, but beware, because it can be influenced by the other cards it is combined with.

This is therefore the card dedicated to loves, whether physical or far more spiritual. It is the colour red that dominates it, evoking the heart, the warmth, but also the root chakra, which is located between our sexual organ and our anus. This same red chakra is associated with the earth, and therefore inevitably takes us back to our creation and to the motherly love we were able to receive during our childhood.
