The Gypsy people, being deeply attached to the Christian religion, devote a boundless worship to their patron saint, who is none other than Sarah, the Black Madonna. Thus, after praying to her all year long, they dedicate a great annual festival to her, where the nomadic people of every nationality gather in the month of May, at Saintes Marie de La Mer, a Camargue village in the south of France. According to legend, Sarah was the Egyptian servant of the 2 sisters of the Virgin Mary who, in the year 42 A.D., had reached the Camargue by sea. Once there, they preached the Christian Faith, while Sarah begged in order to provide for their needs. Later on, and once she had passed away, Sarah thus became the Black Madonna, the patron saint now revered by nomads the world over, since she guarantees them the fertility of the land and good health, for people as much as for animals.

The card therefore depicts Sarah, the dark-skinned Virgin, while behind her you can see a sailing boat gliding over the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Sarah wears a long dress in motley colors, as well as a gold-colored headdress, symbolizing the close ties between the Black Madonna and the radiance of the sun, the moon and the stars, once night has fallen. For to the Gypsy people, Sarah is the powerful intermediary between heaven and earth.
