The horse is a sacred animal among the Gypsies, one that accompanies people all along their journey and even beyond death. It becomes easier then to understand why the Farrier, whose task is to shoe the hooves of the horse, is considered like a pope in Gypsy culture. And when one knows that this shoeing is an initiatory ceremonial that opens access to the various divinatory arts, one realises how important the presence of a farrier within a gathering is for the Gypsies.
For he is indeed the one who is in contact with the Gods, the stars and everything gathered within esotericism. He is also the one called the Elder, for he is the protector and the guarantor of this prestigious people, all too often misunderstood.

The Grand Farrier, or the Pope, is represented on this card by a man of a certain age, judging by his thick beard and his white hair. He stares straight ahead of him and his eyes seem filled with experience and maturity in the face of the things of life.
On his head he wears a cap of blue, red and gold, which links him directly to the Divine, to passion and to the sun. In his right hand he holds a long sceptre on which a white dove is resting, symbolising peace and eternal love. At his feet there is a small quail that seems a touch lost and that the old man ignores, knowing full well how incompatible this bird is with the good health of horses.

You are therefore falling from on high, and are going to find yourself very low down, at least for a time.
